FARMINGTON - U.S. Rep. John Larson recently said on Nutmeg TV that Social Security is the nation’s No. 1 insurance plan.

The conversation with Larson on a topic of special interest to him aired during a special edition of Nutmeg TV’s “The Link.”

Larson is chairman of the House Social Security Committee, part of the House Ways and Means Committee.

“Social Security chair is a very important chair in the Ways and Means Committee, primarily because it affects every single American and it is the nation’s number one insurance plan and the nation’s number one anti-poverty plan. Without Social Security, 90% of our seniors would be living in poverty,” Larson told Nutmeg TV’s CEO Joanie Sutter during the interview.

Sutter asked Larson questions about the Social Security system, including “Is it a tax? An entitlement? Or, is it insurance that working people contribute to, with every paycheck, designed to pay them a continuing income after retirement?”

The conversation came after Larson’s introduction of the Social Security 2100 Act in January. According to a press release from Nutmeg TV, the proposed bill will protect low-income workers, offering benefits 125% above the poverty level. The bill will protect against inflation and it will cut Social Security taxes, said Larson. In addition, the Social Security 2100 Act will increase the maximum wage base from $132,000 to $400,000.
