With Berlin moving up to Class L, high school football schedules are released for 2019 season

NEW BRITAIN - Football schedules were released on Monday with the season beginning Sept. 13 for most area teams.

New Britain kicks off the season that day at home against South Windsor, and the rest of the Hurricanes’ home games come against Hall (Oct. 11), Glastonbury (Oct. 25), Conard (Nov. 1) and Berlin (Nov. 22). Their away games are against Staples (Sept. 20), Manchester (Sept. 27), Simsbury (Oct. 4), East Hartford (Nov. 8) and Southington (Nov. 15). New Britain finished the 2018 regular season with a 9-1 record and lost to No. 2 seed Greenwich in the Class LL playoffs in the first round.

Berlin, which moves up to Class L after being the Class M runner-up last season, will begin the season Sept. 12 at home against Tolland. The Redcoats’ other four home games are against Bulkeley/HMTCA/Weaver (Sept. 20), Northwest Catholic (Oct. 4), Avon (Nov. 1) and Bloomfield (Nov. 15). Their road matchups feature Killingly (Sept. 27), Lewis Mills (Oct. 19), Plainville (Oct. 25), East Catholic (Nov. 8) and New Britain (Nov. 22).

Berlin went 9-1 in the regular season last year, with its lone loss coming against New Britain, earning a No. 3 seed in the Class M playoffs and reaching the state championship game before falling to top-seeded St. Joseph.

Goodwin Tech opens the campaign Sept. 13 at home against Prince Tech and has home matchups against Quinebaug Valley (Sept. 27), Bullard Havens Tech (Oct. 4), Thames River (Oct. 18) and Cheney Tech (Nov. 22). Away games come against O’Brien Tech (Sept. 21), Platt Tech (Nov. 1), MCW United (Nov. 9), ATI (Nov. 16) and Wilcox Tech (Nov. 27). Goodwin Tech went 3-7 last season.

Southington kicks off 2019 on the road Sept. 13 against Conard and has road games against Darien (Sept. 20), Hall (Oct. 4), Glastonbury (Nov. 8) and Cheshire (Nov. 28). The Blue Knights’ home schedule features Enfield (Nov. 27), Manchester (Oct. 11), East Hartford (Oct. 25), Simsbury (Nov. 1) and New Britain (Nov. 15).

Southington finished the regular season 10-0 last year, earned a No. 4 seed in the Class LL playoffs and lost to Fairfield Prep in the first round.

Plainville, which went 6-4 last year, opens the season Sept. 13 at home against East Catholic with additional home games against Bloomfield (Oct. 4), Berlin (Oct. 25), Lewis Mills (Nov. 15), and Farmington (Nov. 28). Its away matchups include Northwest Catholic (Sept. 20), Jonathan Law (Sept. 27), Tolland (Oct. 18), Rocky Hill (Nov. 1) and Avon (Nov. 9).

Newington, which went 4-6 last fall, starts the season Sept. 13 at home against Windsor and has home games against RHAM (Oct. 4), Platt (Oct. 11), Maloney (Oct. 25) and Enfield (Nov. 15), in addition to road contests against Bristol Eastern (Sept. 20), Amity (Sept. 27), E.O. Smith (Nov. 1), Bristol Central (Nov. 8) and Wethersfield (Nov. 27).
